In my search to redo how I work and how I access my information, I’ve purchased a new Smartphone. Sprint’s HTC Mogul.
Its a nice handheld. Light and easy to use. The slider is a bit lose for my particular heavy handed use, but its very useful.
I’ve been spending a while trying to get all the services that I want to use on it (Gmail, Google Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Mobile OneNote, PDF reader, Time Tracking, etc… ) but I’ve been running into several issues. All that occur at the synchronization level.
Its so far well known that there is a issue withe Windows Mobile Device Center
. It took over for ActiveSync with Window Mobile 6.x and Vista operating systems. So far it seriously STINKS like last weeks used diapers.
So far I’ve run into the following problems:
- Won’t recognize the Smartphone Device when syncing after several other syncs, unless I reboot the Mogul.
- Won’t Sync any application like TimeTTracker or Standard Time. (I get that crappy Attention Required Error.)
- PDF transfers won’t activate Reflow mode on any of my PDF’s. Adobe PDF’s have the option of reconfiguring the display of the PDF file so that it wraps differently and it can show the document on smaller screens. Typically ActiveSync would do this transformation for us, but it appears that Windows Mobile won’t.
Other issues I’ve run into is the Gmail Imap folder issue where it can’t read properly HTML emails, but there is a work around for it by using POP3 which sucks but its usable.
This is a seriously disappointing thing. Here I’ve spent good money on a Operating System and hardware, only to get broken beta version of software.
Now I spent all Saturday night looking for work around’s only to find zilch or other people complaining about the same problems as well. Microsoft’s Website shows no recognizing of the issues at all. Its like a big FU to the users.
It appears to me that now that Palm has given up on the mobile handset services, Microsoft has pushed Windows Mobile back to the far far left burner and turned the flame down which is dumb as can be. The IPhone although new will improve with further versions and will get pushed into the business end of the market, taking over Windows Mobile’s place.
Instead of a handheld item that I can use to track my time and projects, read PDF’s while waiting, I got a PIM that has trouble being recognized by my laptop.
How disappointingly frustrating.
