I have been saving up for some time to purchase a UMPC and finally was able to afford the new Samsung Q1U-V.
I purchased it from Costco.com so I could get the extra 2 year warranty as well as the 90 day no question return policy.
6 days after I ordered the Q1U it arrived on my door step unannounced. Costco's shipping notification feature didn't work well and never showed it was updated until the day after it arrived.
I unboxed it as soon as I got the box off the front porch and the digital camera with fresh batteries.
It came with"Getting Started Guide", "Samsung Recovery Solution II/ Reinstallation Windows Vista", and "Safety Instructions" Documents, Restore DVD's, wrist strap which is also used as a hand strap when connected to the back of the Q1U, battery, transfer USB cable, soft case, and the power adapter.
The Q1U fits in my hands nicely and is not heavy. Its been a interesting experience in learning how to use the split keyboard on the unit. My fingers are on the large side and I have to type with the side tips of my thumbs. Instead of using the onscreen keyboard I'm practicing typing in my password with the split keyboard each and every time. I'm getting better and I must say I will be able to type with it for small messages.
I started it up. Immediately I filled out all of the new user information that Microsoft asks for and then Samsung's backup/restore program made the primary backup copy and then I was able to name the computer.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I introduce to you... Q-Bert.
Q-Bert started off running really slow. Everything I did took a while. I felt like I was working on a 486 again with Windows 98.
Here are the things I did to improve the performance:
1. Removed McAfee. This improved the performance immensely. McAfee with all its add-ons just dragged the system to a halt at
times. I installs AVG Free to replace this.
2. Went to the System Properties; Advance tab; the clicked on the Performance Settings button. I changed the setting to "Adjust for best performance." All of the Vista views disappeared and it went back to a XP view. No more Aero. I like Vista icons so I went to Control Panel; Appearance Settings and change the Color Scheme to Windows Vista Basic. Wow did this change make a difference.
At this point the system was running really well. But I still wanted to improve it and I went out and bought a 4gb SD Card x133 speed. I installed this to use with ReadyBoost. Although this made the system more smooth when working with large applications like MindManager and large OneNote files, the system actually ran really well without it.
Something else I found out is a little disconcerting. The localization was set to the UK. I had to change all localization settings to the US. It makes me wonder if this unit has been in someone else hands.
With this I could start to copy over my files and install the needed applications. Ms Office
2007 Enterprise, Ms Project 2007, MindManager 7.0, Alcohol 52%, Skype, Divx, iTunes, Joost (still questionable if this is going to stay), Sprint Broadband Software, Firefox and some other utilities.
I have set it up to connect via Bluetooth to my Sanyo 8400 Cell phone where I have service with Sprint. I am able to connect to the Internet via the EV-DO service. I know Bluetooth is a little slower then the USB, but to connect wirelessly is wonderful. And that its all you can eat without issue, unlike those other services. :)
I've really enjoined this today while at Fry's. I was buying another 4gb SD Card and was looking for the right one for ReadyBoost. Anyone that has ever visited Fry's knows what excellent customer service they have. When I asked which SD Card was best for ReadyBoost, I got the look. Ya know, deer in the head lights look. So I pulled out Q-Bert while the Customer Service Rep sat there thinking and muttering something about "Yeah, I heard about that. Who makes it?" Powered up the Internet and did a little searching. I found what I needed and went right over to the counter and pulled the card I wanted. This alone was worth the whole cost of Q-Bert.
As I'm typing about this being mobile, I want to tell you about the neat little carrying case that I tote Q-Bert around in.
A couple of years ago my wife went to Alaska (before I knew her) and she took this great little bag that held all her doohickeys in it. (Yes it was a purse.)
Its a Xhilaration bag. It has the right amount of pockets in a canvas form. She was no longer using it and I saw that it looked close enough like a Utility bag and repurposed it for UMPC carrying.
Any questions, leave a comment.

How well is the internet explorer running?
Does it handle video well?
IE runs really well. the pen flicks are what make IE usable in my opinion.
Pen flicks are when you can drag the mouse up on a page and the page will move up. As if you grabbed the page and was pulling up.
This doesn't work in Firefox. Firefox takes up so much processor time I only have it open by it self. All other apps stay close.
As for internet browsing, it works great. Either connected to my homes wireless or dialed up through my cell phone. No problems there.
I haven't done too much video on the Q1. When viewing Divx videos it runs great! I tried to install Dawn of War to play, but the video in its basic form wasn't that good and it was hard to move around. I removed it.
Any more questions feel free to ask.

Could not find it on Costco. Do you have an item number?
Thanks Christopher
Hi,
It was Item# 211447. They may have not ordered any more. Check Origamiproject.com. Thats where it was announced that Costco had it.
this is link to q1 ultra on costco site: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11223235&search=Samsung&Mo=22&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Sp=S&N=0&whse=BC&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=Samsung&Ntt=Samsung&No=2&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Nty=1&topnav=&s=1
Christopher,
About Video,
1) Have you tried a variable bitrate (VBR) DivX?
2) Have you tried a video in VLC (open-source player, plays just about everything, but slower than WMP)
3) How about a Standard-Def (DVD resolution) video encoded in AVC (MPEG-4 part 10, aka H.264) in an .MP4 wrapper - the new video iPod standard? (.MP4 wrapper > VLC.)
Hi,
I ran DIVX on the Q1U and it worked great. Actually the images of the movies at this post is scenes from the DIVX.
I also ran several IPOD videos without a hitch.
Other then that I had a hardware issue that didn't allow me to try out any other application. Its on my list of things to do.
Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the write up of the Q1U-V. I have a few uses in mind that would suit this computer - as a travel companion; to store data, access maps and notes, and keep in touch via email, audio and video messages, as well as a "conversation computer;" that can be passed around when people are talking to make notes, capture audio and video, etc.
With that in mind, did you test the quality of the built in cams? I've read a quick glance type writeup that said it was the typical low quality cam, which has low contrast, pixelated, and very slow to update. I'm not asking for miracles, but the Macbook's built in camera has very decent quality, without any of those issues, something similar would be fine. Can you post a sample video?
Also, I know Samsung switched to a slower processor for this new model. I don't care so much about application startup time, but would it be fast enough to run apps like Google Earth, which use 3d video, processing and data streaming?
Finally, can you give any details on how long the unit lasts in standby mode, and how long it takes to come back from standby and hibernate? I hate to sound like an Apple zealot, and I don't know why they're so much better, but Apple models come back from standby immediately, something similar would be ideal.
Hi David,
Thanks for the comments.
*With that in mind, did you test the quality of the built in cams? Can you post a sample video?
I was thinking of doing a test with the video and see how well it works. I have installed Camastia and plan on doing some videos of other things, but I can do one for the video as well. Check back in a week or so.
Would it be fast enough to run apps like Google Earth, which use 3d video, processing and data streaming?
I just installed the 2Gb memory and the machine is responsive and running very well. I'm a heavy user and have tons of apps installed and running. So its currently taking up about 1Gb of memory just for the applications running. I'm sure it runs smoothly with google earth. The graphics card on here is not the best. I am in the process of doing a graphic test and will post that probably by the end of the week. I'll add the google earth to the test.
How long it takes to come back from standby and hibernate?
I'm also doing a battery test and haven't tested how long it can be in sleep mode. I'm not sure if I'm that patient. From my usage of the Q1U it has been idle for over 3 hours and comes back fine. I didn't look at the battery setting then but its something that can be tested. Might want to check out the Samsung Forums at www.gottabemobile.com and ask there. Maybe someone more patient is willing to test it out.
Again thanks for commenting.

Cristopher,
I just got my Q1 yesterday and have been reading your pages. Very helpful, I must say.
One thing I noticed is that when I check my hard drive properties it shows 35GB to be avalable out of 45GB. What's up with that ? This is suppose to be a 60 gig drive right ?
Is it partitioned or something that only part of it shows up ? Where's the rest ? Does Vista and preloaded program take up that much of it ?
Any idea, I'm new to Vista and so far I'm not too impressed.
thanks,
Robert
Hi Robert,
The Samsung Q1U has a hidden partition that is used for Restoring the software and Operating System without having to use the disks.
Also Vista takes up about 15Gb, plus there is the bloatware that takes up space as well.
Check out www.gottabemobile.com forums for more information on the Q1U. They have tons of great information there and can help you out further.
Hope you enjoy your Q1U.
Christopher
Christopher,
Ahh, explains it all. Thanks for the info and help. Now it's time to get busy...

I bought mine August 4th and followed your instructions for higher performance and I love mine, she performs great( She's named Q tee). I am waiting for the USB keyboard to arrive for use when I'm sitting home. (Home is a sailboat in the Virgin Islands).
I have played a few movies on her and the video seems fine.
Also, any external CD/DVD drive will work. I have had a digistor DVD/CD burner and I didn't need to download any drivers. It works great.

Hello! I read this article! Big thanks to author, very interesting. Write more.
Hi. Do you know if the Q1U-V supports the new SDHC cards? Is there a software or firmware upgrade required? I'd like to put in a 8GB SDHC card and run video from the card rather than the hard drive to see if it improves performance.
Hello,
Yes it will see the SDHD cards. They work pretty well in the unit.
I had two 4gb that I put in for ReadyBoost. Worked great.
